Riley kicked over an old chair and covered her ears as it came crashing to the ground. Just as well this classroom is abandoned, she thought to herself as she looked around. It had been a hard week and it wasn't getting any easier. She had dressed up to go to the Halloween feast only to find that her best friend had been auctioned off to a Slytherin for the Yule ball. Crossing her arms Riley stomped off to the front of the class and looked over it at the decrepid and derelict chairs and desks strewn across the cracked floor. It was silent and thats what she needed, this whole being a teenager thing wasn't working for the young Hufflepuff, and she didn't quite know what to do.

Slumping onto the old teachers chair she put her feet up on the desk and leant back, her worn converse's looking even more shabby as the sun shone through a broken window and right onto them. Riley sighed, she wondered where her friends were, probably in their classes, she had never been the academic type. Ever since she picked up a broom she knew it was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life, and being selected as a Seeker for her team this year only made that dream closer to her now more than ever. Riley looked forward to her Quidditch games, more so because Sam was on the team. Looking around the room she tried to think about the last time she saw Sam, it had all been so confusing, he had held her hand hadn't he? Or the young girl could have just been mistaken.

After returning his broom back up to his dorm, Sam made his way down through the castle. He had spent most of the morning on the Quidditch Pitch, it was a glorious Spring day - perfect flying weather. He knew the Quidditch tournament was coming up and he was ready to get his butt into gear. After training all of last year and this year he was more than prepared to knock some heads together. Even though he tried out for Chaser, he was glad he was given Beater once again. After playing the same position for the past 4 years, he could do it with his eyes shut, therefore there was a lot less pressure on the fifteen year old who already had a lot on his plate.

Students pushed past him in a hurry with towels under their arms as they made their way to the lake, Sam was pressuming so anyway. It was such a nice day it would be almost a sin to miss out on it. Yet, Sam was willing to sin this time however, as he made his way to the abandoned classroom on the second floor. He only discovered it a few days ago but he had visited it many times since. Not many students favoured the unpleasant atmosphere in the room but Sam wasn't freaked out by spiders or the hanging cobwebs or the eerie draught. Sam found the room acutually quite peaceful, an escape, somewhere that he knew he wouldn't be disturbed especially on a sunny day.

Sam twisted the handle to the door and opened it, but not fully. Because of the overall emptiness of the room, it didn't take him long to realise there was already someone there. Sam stared ahead at the girl in the chair, "Riley?" Sam's soft voice echoed around the still room for a few seconds after her name left his lips. His eyes didn't move from her as he stepped inside the room and simply shut the door behind him.

Riley flinched slightly as she heard footsteps outside the abandoned classroom, turning her head to get a better look she leaned back slightly more in the chair. When her name was called her head turned more abruptly and her arms flew up into the air as she fell right to the ground, almost taking the desk with her. A high pitched scream echoed through the classroom followed by a thump. "Oof." she said sitting up and rubbing her back which had taken most of the impact. Riley looked up to see Sam standing above her and her face bore a half panicked, half relieved look. "Sam?" she questioned, even though she was certain it was him.

It suddenly hit her that Sam was standing over her and she put her hand up to her hair and checked it didn't loom too bad, something so out of character for the tom boy. Riley blinked a few times and looked around at the room, which appeared to be spinning. "Woah" she said blinking once more ", I mean hi" she said, realising her best friend was standing right next to her and she had barely said two words to him. What was he doing here anyway, Riley was so confused as to what was going on between the pair lately, and his being here only made it more confusing. That and the fact she had just owned herself on a chair.

Riley falling off her chair wasn't exactly the reaction that Sam was hoping for when he entered the room. Then again, what reaction did he want? He knew what he felt but how did she feel? He didn't want to ruin another friendship by saying something stupid, something that would make things unbelievably awkward for the two of them. But then again, what if it went the other way? That was one of the reasons why he so secretly wanted Riley to win that auction, that way he wouldn't have had to make a complete fool of himself by asking her to go with him to the Ball. The other reason why he wanted her to win, was because he knew it would have been one of the best nights of his life.

Sam didn't have to think twice about hurrying to Riley's aid but she seemed to have managed to recollect herself quite well. Sam let out a soft sigh that was followed by a short chuckle. "Hi." He said, smiling down at her. "Are you alright?" He asked genuinely concerned about his friend and he held out a hand for her to take. However, as concerned as he was, Sam released the small fit of laughter that he had tried so hard to keep in, "I'm sorry. But you have to admit. That was kinda funny." He gasped between laughs. That was one of the things that Sam found so great about Riley. She was so impeccably cool. Riley wasn't one of those girls who took those kind of things to heart, she wasn't someone who knew their appearance would be at risk after a fall like that. Not that it really mattered, Riley always looked stunning to Sam.

Riley looked up at Sam and gladly took the hand he offered her in support. "Yeah, I'm fine" she said, shaking it off. As he pulled her up Riley fell victim to another one of Sam's signature smiles, the very one that all of a sudden had the power to almost posess her. When Sam laughed at her Riley wasn't offended at all, in fact she too had to admit it was pretty funny, and nobody had been hurt anyway, it had all been done in good humour. "Hey!" she said, pushing him lightly as he pulled her up from the ground. He deserved at least a friendly push for laughing at her misfortune, even though she didn't particularly care. "OK I guess I have to agree with you on that" she said laughing lightly as she looked over at her friend.

"What are you doing here?" she asked, a little surprised at their chance meeting, but happy nevertheless. It was a little odd that they had both ended up coming to the same place at the same time, but it had to be just a chance meeting, what else would it be? Riley smiled and rubbed her back a little, in an attempt to soothe the pain without looking like a wimp, which she most certainly was not, she still bore the large scar on her thigh from a Quidditch accident all but a year ago and she hadn't even cried then. Looking right up at Sam she tried to keep their eyes from meeting but it seemed as though all of her efforts were in vain, not wanting it to get too awkward Riley coughed and looked away slightly waiting fro somebody to say something, anything.

As Riley took his hand, Sam pulled up her petite figure with great ease, smiling at her as he did so. However, he made it his business this time to let go of her hand immediatelty after she stablised herself. Even though he didn't partically want to let go of her touch, he didn't want to re-live the awkwardness he felt back in the North Tower not that long ago when he had made the obvious blunder of holding her hand for too long. He pulled his hand away from hers and simply rolled up the sleeves of his sweater, only to recover from the fact that he pulled away in the first place. Sam allowed Riley to push him as he teased her and he stumbled back a few steps from the force. Sam began to feel the absence of her touch and he rubbed his shoulder subconsciously where she had pushed him as his mind wandered elsewhere.

She was standing right next to him and yet still Sam began to wonder about her, about the possibilities, the same things that ran through his head most nights of what could actually become of the two if luck was on his side. Sam was pretty much clueless about how Riley felt about all of this and he certainly didn't have the courage to just put himself out there without having the smallest idea of how she was feeling. Although, he couldn't imagine the electricity that bounced between the pair being easily ignored. It was too blantantly obvious to be ignored. He quickly zoned back to the present as Riley asked him his reason for being here. Immediately his mind just went blank. It literally was wiped clean as Riley's eyes met his own. His train of thought was completely lost as he stared back at her, he didn't know what on earth had come over him, he couldn't even answer a simple question.

Sam never felt so unbelievably vunerable to a girl before in his life. As she looked away, Sam quickly shook his head in hope that maybe words would return, any words. "Eh.." Sam began eventually after several minutes of silence, "Y'know...just uh..." What? Why the hell am I here?! Sam questioned himself with great fustration before deciding just to say anything, "...chilling." 'Chilling'?! At this point Sam wanted to run out of the room bang his head against the wall several times and jump out a window, in consecutive order. Sam would have much preferred to have jumped out of the highest window of the North Tower than be standing there in front of Riley. But sadly, reality sank in and Sam mumbled a quick, "What about you?", just for the conversations sake. Even though it no where near recovered his lame comment, Sam knew he had to move on from it. Although he was pretty sure that moment would haunt him for the rest of his life regardless. What a poor choice of timing to use that word for the first time.

Riley looked at Sam, he was obviously just as dumbfounded as she was. But now she had to think of what she was going to say. She surely wasn't going to tell him the truth, that she had been up there having a tantrum of epic proportions. She looked over his shoulder at the upturned chair, reassuring herself that he wouldn't have noticed her embarassing lash of anger. Riley awkwardly placed her hand on the back of her head and scratched it, immediately realising how stupid she must have looked and quickly placing it back by her side. "Oh-ah, same" she said, stumbling on her words but ultimately taking the easy way out. It puzzled her that she suddenly found it so awkward to talk to Sam, he was one of her best friends and the tom boy usually had no trouble at all talking to boys.

Riley knew that things had changed between the pair, but she wasn't sure how or why. She had a feeling deep down that she liked him, more than liked him, but she couldn't be sure whether he liked her back or not. She could be misreading the signs, and if she acted on it she could completely embarrass herself and probaby never get over it. "So, are you going to the Yule ball?" she asked casually, of course she already knew he was, having witnessed the Slytherin girl win him in the auction. But she wanted to test the waters and at the very least see what he had to say about it. For all she knew he might not even want to go with Hilde, but she wasn't going to jump to any conclusions. Fiddling with her bracelet she looked down at the floor, seeming to shrink down every time she was near Sam, she was so shy and awkward she felt ridiculous. But it seemed like he was too, so perhaps he did have feelings for her?

Nevertheless Riley was overthinking things again, she just needed to be herself and snap out of whatever crazy mood she was in. Looking up at the roof she hoped like hell she hadn't totally embarrassed herself in front of her best friend. Real smooth Riley, falling right off your chair she thought to herself, desperately hoping Sam didn't think she was a total moron. But everytime she looked at that smile and those eyes she knew that he could never think anything as low as that about her. He was a true friend and what if them being together ruined that? Would she take the risk?

Riley didn't seem to really acknowledge his obnoxious and silly choice of wording. In fact she seemed to just let it pass like the whole misfortune never happened. Or did she? Her reply was just as short as his was and with no offence, it was just as lame. Sam looked at Riley through the shaggy strands of his chestnut brown hair before sliding them across his forehead. His fringe was almost so long that he could tuck it behind his ear at this stage. Sam now looked at her without anything barricading his sight. However, instead of continuing to look at her, Sam dodged her gaze as she imposed a question on him. One that he wasn't really expecting. One that he didn't know how to answer.

This time, Sam was unable to replace the word 'chilling' for an answer. He couldn't escape that easily this time. There was nothing for it, except just telling the truth. "I guess." He replied slowly. Instead of loss of words, there was a loss of moisture in Sam's mouth, and his voice was left scathy and dry. Sam brought a closed fist to his mouth as he quietly cleared his throat in hopes that his voice would resume some normality. "I'm pretty sure I have to." He continued, his eyes still focusing on everything but Riley. It was in the rules of the Brotherhood as far as Sam could remember and so, Sam would have to take Hilde to the Yule Ball even though his preferred date lay in Riley.

"Although.." Although?! Why is there an although? He asked himself hurriedly. The word seemed to have slipped from his lips freely without Sam really allowing it to. "...although, I really wish you would have won that auction." There it was again, the words escaping from his mouth so effortlessly. Sam's soft blue eyes looked up at Riley's, searching for a reaction to the brave thing he had just admitted. Something he had yearned to say since the night of the auction. Since the very second that Sam was sold off to Hilde Lindstrom.

Riley's head slumped down a little more as Sam admitted what she already knew, that he had to go. But she looked up suddenly as he pronounced that there was an although. What? She thought to herself, knowing full well there was no way she could go to the Yule Ball with him, and hoping that he wouldn't suggest he would go with both of them. Things were awkward enough between them without there being a third wheel. But as he bravely admitted that he wished she had won Riley's eyes welled up a little, "What?" she said, almost whispering as she wiped her eyes a little, don't let him see you crying she said very adimently to herself. Standing up a little straighter Riley looked Sam straight in the eyes. "So do I" she said, her voice shaking a little.

Riley almost put her hand over her mouth, she had been a little too brave in her choice of words and now she wished she could just run away and end this whole embarrassment of a chance meeting. She in turn looked for Sam's reaction, finding her fingers picking at a loose thread on her jeans, wishing she had looked a little less like a boy today of all days, vowing to herself she would give in to her mother and let her choose her dress for the Yule Ball, even if she would be going alone. At least she would have some fun, the glee club would be performing and Riley had very proudly landed a solo for the performance, as had Sam.

Looking up at the roof Riley let out a deep breath that she had been holding in so tightly, as if her life actually depended on the reply that would be so effortlessly executed by Sam. She desperately tried to think what his reply could be, did he like her? She had no idea, but the way he was acting around her seemed different to the way they usually were together, that had to mean something didn't it. It made her heart race when he admitted that his preffered date choice lay in her, her of all people, she honestly couldn't believe it and thought maybe, just maybe he felt the same way she did.

Sam didn't really know why he did what he did. It wasn't like he was expecting a reply that would please him, he was actually expecting everything to go awkward and Riley to tell him that she didn't think or feel that way and that that was the end of their friendship. However not one of those expectations became a reality. Riley had said the three words that he was so secretly hoping for; 'So do I'. Sam mumbled a quiet yet dumbstruck, "Oh.." As he began to think frantically in his head. As he tried to become accustomed to the new change of thinking. She had admitted that she too wanted to win that bid. Which technically meant that she was feeling the same way as he was, or somewhere along the lines of that.

"Oh!" He said quickly, stopping all thoughts abruptly as he broke his gaze away from the fixed spot on the wall, the spot in which he had been staring at for the past minute or so. Sam shook his head just as quickly, his hair once more blocking Riley from his sight and as he swept it across his forehead with his fingers he apoligised, "What I mean to say is-" Sam cleared his throat once more in attempt to come up with a better word than "-oh?" A gentle yet playful smile formed across Sam's lips. There was enough evidence in how he said that last 'Oh', that made it obvious it was a question and a hopeful question at that.

Sam seemed to exceed the amount of times he could use the simple word, 'Oh'. Yet, if Sam could go back in time and change things he wouldn't. Maybe he would change how dumb he had acted around Riley in the recent times and maybe some - or a lot - of the dumb things he said that followed his acts, but when he came to think about it, 'Oh' wasn't the worst word he could have used three times in this situation. The small two lettered word seemed to sum up how he felt on each occasion as Riley's words slowly sank in - suprise, realisation and uncertainty. Sam wasn't even sure if Riley meant what he thought she meant. Maybe she wanted him to go with her as a friend? That thought seemed to obliterate any of the hopeful possibilites that he was wishing for, because in Sam's head, it was the most probable.

((btw sam's not doing that performance thing anymore))

Riley started to worry as all that Sam could come up with was 'oh'. But as Sam flicked his fringe away it seemed as though there was hope for the pair. She even mustered up another smile as Sam did the same. "Is?" Riley questioned, a little too quickly for her liking. Now it seemed as though the way she felt was the same way he felt. All of the events that had just taken place, the things he said, surely he couldn't feel any other way? But lately Riley had noticed a change in herself, it was becoming more and more difficult for her to judge what boys really meant or thought, something that was rather different for the tom boy. Riley then realised that her mouth was still open, half in shock of what Sam might be about to say. Closing it quickly she looked right at him and decided to just let him say it, not butt in again.

Riley was over analysing yet again, it was something that every teenager seemed to do. By the look on Sam's face she could tell he was doing it too. She so hoped he was thinking what she thought he was. She also hoped like crazy that he didn't misinterpret what she had said and think she wanted him to go with her as a friend. This Yule Ball was going to be different from last years, no matter what it took. She had already picked out a dress, and a girly dress at that, she didn't want to look silly and get into a fight with Amelia like last year. Funnily something took over Riley and she found herself twirling her hair around her finger. Something that up until now she never would have contemplated doing. She didn't know quite what was happening, perhaps that giggly teenahge girl inside of her had finally managed to get through that childish tom boy.

There was no way that Sam could work around avoiding his confession this time. After the two had dodged it for so long, it now came down to him. He couldn't not answer her question and he couldn't answer it with an 'oh' either. In fact, Sam could barely answer it at all. How could he tell her how he felt without sounding like a sap. Perhaps, the sixteen year old was a complete and utter sap? Still, Riley didn't have to know that and besides, no words really fitted how he felt about Riley. No words could really describe her in general. One could say she was indescribable, in the best sense of course and as he stood there, watching her, taking in every detail of her perfect face, all Sam wanted to do was to kiss her.

The idea seemed pretty outrageous at first but as the idea settled and Sam got over the shock of actually kissing his best friend, it seemed a lot more possible. Sure, the idea had entered his mind, once or twice (or several times) when he spoke to her. But it was never really a possibility mainly because Sam had too much pride to take that kind of rejection. This time, he didn't feel so afraid of her rejecting him, partially because he had a feeling that she wouldn't reject him, however he didn't really allow that thought to fully surface, just in case it happened to jinx it. Sam watched with disappointment as Riley closed her mouth, knowing that it really was all up to him now.

It seemed to happen pretty fast though, Sam closing the distance between them, his calloused hands holding her head, his lips touching hers. It was as if a sudden rush of courage spread through his bones, his blood, his heart in a simple matter of seconds. His eyes, closed, his lips upon hers fully now, Sam sank into the kiss in proper disbelief. Her lips were deliciously soft against his, his heart pounded harder against his chest as his body moved in closer to hers, his hands slid into her hair. It was just as he imagined it would be. With severe mental objection Sam regretably pulled away from her. He opened his eyes and gazed directly at her own. "Pretty much that..." He answered slowly, still mesmirised by what had just happened between the two. His hands were still in her hair and his body was just as close to hers as it was when they kissed. It was as if he wasn't ready to fully let the moment go, just yet.

It seemed like sooner or later a confession was inevitable, whether it was to be Riley or Sam was the question. Riley didn't think it was going to be her, because in all honesty what was she going to say. Whatever the sixteen year old said would come out soundig stupid because she simply had never been able to find the words to describe how she felt about Sam, and the fact was that if she let all of her feelings out she was scared that she would discover Sam felt nothing of the same towards her and she would be hopelessly rejected. But now the moment between them all of a sudden didn't feel awkward, Riley realised that all along she had felt comfortable with Sam, they just seemed to fit so well together.

Riley almost lost her footing as Sam got closer to her, so close she could hear his heartbeat and feel his warm breath on her neck. She thought about backing away, but she had a fair idea of what was happening and she had wanted it to happen for so long, now it finally was she almost couldn't believe it all. As Sam's hands gently cupped her head Riley forgot to breathe. As his lips brushed against hers it seemed like the natural reaction to kiss him back and she did as she felt her heart beating more rapidly than it ever had before.

Now they had crossed over the friend territory Riley felt herself wanting more. Her lips felt cold with the absence of his lips, though she could still feel his breath on her neck and his hands gently resting through her hair. When he spoke it felt like she was a different person, like they were both so grown up, so different from when they had first met. Riley felt her hands moving up to Sam's shoulders then resting just behind his head. Sure she had ruffled that shaggy brown hair numbers of times before, but this time was different and something about it just felt right. She pulled his head in closer and kissed him once more, slowly on the lips, wanting to savour the moment this time, never wanting it to end.

As her hands rested on his shoulders, Sam's large hands slid to the bottom of her neck resting there until she had kissed him again. He honestly couldn't think of a time when he was happier, when his heart had beated harder. He closed his eyes as he sunk further into their kiss. Everything fell into place so perfectly, it was still hard for him to believe that this was happening. That not only was he kissing Riley but she was kissing him back, something Sam never thought would happen. Ever. His hands moved down to the small of her back, around her petite waist. Their kiss became more passionate with each passing second, as if all the feelings that Sam had so painfully bottled up were being unleashed in the simple action taken by their lips.

Sam pulled away regretably for air even though he didn't particalary want to. He leaned down and pecked at her lips softly a couple more times, smiling affectionately with every kiss planted on her lips. Smoothly, Sam moved his hands up her back, pulling her into a hug. Yes, they had hugged before, but it wasn't like this. Their bodies had never been so close and as he took in the smell of her hair, Sam found himself smiling again. "You have no idea, how long I've wanted this." Sam whispered to her fondly. It was unknown to him how long Riley was feeling like he was, but it didn't seem to matter, she felt the same way about him. Which had come as a severe shock to the Hufflepuff and as he held her, he didn't want to let her go, just in case this was all a dream.

Riley never wanted to leave the abandoned classrooom, she wanted this moment to last forever, she never wanted it to end. Her skin seemed to warm with his touch, as his hands moved down her back to rest on her waist. It was as though this was a dream, the fact that he had kissed her, that she had been bold enough to kiss back seemed like it was too good to be true. But as she felt her heart beating in time with his she knew it had to be reality, as he sunk into the kiss deeper so did she in turn and as he pecked her lips so gently once more her heart ached to know that she couldn't be with him at the Yule Ball.

Feeling the smile on her lips as he so affectionately pecked them, she knew this was it, this was true happiness. Feeling his whisper against her ear Riley's smile grew wider once more as she leant her head on his shoulder, being pulled in even closer than ever before. This hug was so different to the times before, they were so close she could feel his heart beating against her, smiling at each rise and fall in his chest as he breathed in deeply. "I have a fair idea" she said, not knowing what else she could say now, now that they both knew eachothers true feelings it was like a weight was lifted from the Hufflepuff, she could be herself around him now. Of course there would still have to be the formalities, but even without them, Riley knew that Sam Prince was hers, and she was his.
