Jonathan sat quietly behind his desk, reading over the essays that had been submitted on Egyptian Magic. There were many well written essays and he was proud. As the students entered, he nodded to several and pushed the papers aside. Jonathan stood up and filled his cup of coffee. He couldn't shake the slightly lazy feeling that had been creeping into him, so he sipped coffee and wondered how long he would lecture. When everyone had finally taken their seats, Jonathan smiled and walked to the front of his desk. "Well, as many of you may or may not like, we are now entering into our studies of Greek Mythology." He paused and smiled wider when he heard some excited chatter. "If you could please take notes as I lecture, we are going to cover Sirens today." He paused and took another cautious sip of his coffee as she waited for the students to prepare to take notes. "In Greek mythology, Sirens are creatures with the heads of women and the bodies of birds. They are said to be among the most dangerous and seductive of the Greek mythology creatures. In Mythology there were only three and they were sisters. They were rumored to have lived on the island of Sirenum scopuli, not very clever if you ask me, if their goal was to lure unsuspecting sailors. Though it's more likely that they lived on the ilans of Anthemoessa. Whatever their homeland was, it is always on an island surrounded by cliffs and ocean." Jonathan paused to take another sip of his coffee as he allowed the students to take additional notes. "The sirens lured sailors with their captivating song and music. When they would approach in their ships, they would wreck into the rocky cliff face. Accoring to mythology, the Sirens were the companions of Persephone, the Queen of the underworld, and were given wings by Demeter, the goddess of grain and fertility and mother of Persephone. Demeter gave them their wings to aid in the search of Persephone when she was abducted by Hades. The sirens were used to call on Persephone in their search of her. Their voices would draw upon people and thus they learned that they could use their music to lure their victims." "It is widely believed that the Sirens were cannibals and seers. They were able to see the past and future. Although their songs were of humans, their true form is sometimes argued. The most common form is the one I mentioned earlier. But it is often speculated that their true forms were women with the manes of lions and feet of birds. Sometimes they are beautiful women whose appearances matched that of their voice to be truly seductive and luring to those unsuspecting sailors. No matter the confusion of the appearance, it is always consistent that they had wings." Jonathan glanced at the clock and then at the students. He smiled. "Well, I'll let you go early today. There is an excellent story you can read about Odysseus and his adventures called Homer's Odyssey. If you'd like a little more insight into the mysterious sirens you can read about Odysseus and write a short essay. Otherwise, there is no homework. Just make sure you took good notes and keep those to study for the OWLS." He smiled, then waved his hand at the door. "You're dismissed!” Homework Assignment: Just RP the lesson. If you want some extra points, you can read about Odysseus and write a short essay on him. Here is an excellent article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odyssey |

Isaia Romanes walked into the History of Magic classroom, and he looked around to see that there was not many people in here, in fact he was the first one. It was not really surprising for him anyway. Isaia took his seat near the front of the classroom to be taught by one of his favorite professors that was his Head of House. Isaia didn't even know why he was picked to be Prefect, but it was a good badge to have, but he had big shoes to fill because of his sisters being prefects and all. Isaia was the Ravenclaw Prefect, and then he wondered if his brother would be prefect too. It was a tough call. At last, it seemed like it was time to begin the lesson for today, and of course, Isaia was more than interested to learn about the joys of learning about History. It was something he loved, and he appeared to be actually good at it too. He could remember everything that he had learned, and not just that but he loved the information that he was learning from it too. It was just so interesting to him. The fifth years were going into the studies of Greek Mythology, and he immediately took out some parchment, ink and a quill so that he could write down as many notes as possible. The topic of today was over Sirens. Didn't the Rumor Has It refer to someone as a Siren? That was interesting. The sounds of sirens were rather bad, since they were among the most dangerous creatures (though he didn't care about the seductive part). Isaia continued to write as much as he could on this fascinating subject that kept him entertained whereas some others were going to sleep. The sirens were the ones that lured sailors with their song and music, and then they would wreck and presumably, die. The sirens sounded like some powerful creatures, with the power to see into the past and future, so he wondered if that was where the original seers came from. He finished up his notes, and they were released early. Isaia packed up his things and he left the classroom having learned so very much from Professor Spenser. |

Georgiana walked into the History of Magic classroom. She didn't mind going to class for once. Hey day had been pretty boring so far with no early morning patrol, which she was very happy about. As the Professor began the class she was pleased with what they were going to be learning about. Since not many of her classmates were muggle most never went to Elementary school and one of the things that they did learn about in elementary school suprisingly was a few Greek myths, plus the childhood movies based on the storyof Hercules was always a favorite of hers. Taking out some parchment and her ink well she prepared herself for the notes that she was going to take. Fishing for her quill in her side bag that was sitting on the floor by her feet. Today the were learning about Sirens which seemed to be a pretty interesting topic for learning. As the Professor went on about the Sirens she took a few notes wondering what would be on the OWL test at the end of the year about the Sirens. But she was sure she'd be glad that she took good notes at the end of the semester to study from. |

Kate walked to the History of Magic classroom. It was her favorite class and she often looked forward to it.She was a bit late today as she had done a lot of thinking lately. The OWLs were fast approaching and she had just remembered that it was Stefan's birthday. It had been ages since she had seen him.Everyday she wondered where he was and how he was.She just hoped that where ever e was things were as okay as they could be.She just wanted to see him and make sure he was okay.Kate sighed as she sat down. She had enough on her plate really-stupid RHI magazine. When she was seated she took out her books and her notes pens.Today they would be learning about Greek Mythology. They had never learned about it in school-they had more learned about Irish history and the Romans which had been there civilization outside Ireland. There had been brief mentioning of it but nothing too serious. As Professor Spenser talked about Sirens and such she took down notes. Her hand was sore after the end of the class. She remembered RHI calling Sapphire a Siren. She doubted Sapphire was any type of cannibal. It was quite interesting and even though her and was sore she was actually quite interesting. She did contemplate doing the essay though really she wasn't in the mood. She might do it later. .When class was finished her hand was practically aching. She collected her things and thanked the professor and left. |
