Transfiguration 1:1

Lesson One: Types of Transfiguration
The door to the Transfiguration classroom stood wide open, with Leif leaning against the wall right next to it. He had thought carefully about what to do, deciding against waiting on his students inside of the room. Instead, he was stood outside. Greeting them with a warm smile in the hopes of calming any nerves they might have. They were first years, after all. This was another new room, new subject, new professor to get used to. A whole lot of things to get used to. Once he had a feeling they were all inside Leif stepped inside himself, leaving the door open just a crack to spare any latecomers of drawing full attention to themselves by having to open the creaky door.

"Welcome," He greeted his class as he strolled over to his desk, giving a small flick of his wand to lift a piece of chalk near the board before he turned around to face his students. "To Transfiguration." Leif smiled, trying not to grimace as the chalk made a terrible sound while underlining the term transfiguration on the blackboard behind him. "My name is Professor Leif Odegard and I will be your professor for the next few years." He introduced himself. "Transfiguration is a very powerful branch of magic, capable of changing almost anything from one thing to another. Whether it be a quill into a spoon.." Leif explained, tapping one of the quills on his desk and turning it into a spoon as he spoke. "Or even a person into an animal." He finished with a slight grin, pointing his wand at the board behind him to make a list appear.

Types of Transfiguration
Inanimate to Inanimate
Inanimate to Animate
Animate to Inanimate
Animate to Animate
Switching
Conjuring
Vanishing

"Since I don't want to assume all of you know each and every term written on the board here, we'll start with some vocabulary. I'll try to make it quick as to not bore you, so make sure to pay attention and write along." Leif told his students, knowing kids their age had an attention span that generally didn't last more than thirty minutes. "Inanimate refers to something that isn't mobile nor living. It doesn't move, like a rock, a chair or even a building. Those are all inanimate. Animate, as you might've guessed, is the exact opposite. Anything living, moving. Like you and I, the owls up in the Owlery or the creatures in the lake." He explained, looking around to see if there were any faces that screamed confusion or perhaps excitement at his mention of the lake.

"Now let's combine those two. Inanimate to inanimate transfiguration simply means turning one non-living thing into another. Like how I turned that quill into a spoon. This is the easiest form of trasnfiguration, especially when you start with objects that are roughly the same size." Leif waved his wand at one of the books on his desk, turning it into a delicate silver box of similar size. "Inanimate to animate transfiguration," He waved his wand again, turning the cyan quill that had been sitting in an inkpot on his desk into a chirping bluebird, "You guessed it, turns a thing without live into something living. Don't be fooled though, while the creature looks alive it lacks a soul and isn't truly living. True life is something we cannot give." He finished explaining, waving his wand to turn the bird back into a quill which slowly floated towards the floor.

"If I had turned that bird into a different type of quill instead of using untransfiguration, that would've been an example of animate to inanimate transfiguration. For that type of transfiguration it's important to note that you don't kill a creature when you turn it into something inanimate, it's more like pressing pause on their life for a short time." Leif told them, picking up the quill and placing it back into the inkpot. "Finally," He continued, glancing at the clock to see time was almost up. Although some of his students' faces could've told him the same. "Animate to animate changes a living thing into another. Like a snail into a slug or a human into a toad, the latter being particularly populair in Muggle stories." He laughed. "Right, that's it for today. I know all of this theory can be tiring but it's important to understand what we're talking about before we'll be able to get out our wands and actually try to perform magic. You all did great today, though. See you next week!"

Roleplay the lesson for full marks.

Ambrose was curious to see what sort of things they would be learning at Hogwarts. He knew about some of the basics, but he had never discussed school much with his parents. Or they had never discussed school much with him. Either way, he would be fine figuring it out on his own. It was nice to learn about new things again. Although he admittedly dreaded astronomy and herbology.

He greeted the professor when he walked into the classroom. At least he figured the man next to the door was the professor. If he wasn't something strange was going on. Ambrose took a seat and made sure to get everything he needed to take notes out of his bag. He started writing along when the professor began his lesson and told them about different types of transfiguration. He grinned when the man eventually turned a quill into a bird and watched it fly through the classroom for a second before it was turned back into what it had been before. Cool. When class was dismissed Ambrose packed up his things and headed out, already excited to get to try transfiguration for himself at some point.

Thomas was nervous for the first lot of classes. He wondered what Transfiguration was like and what it was really about. The name seemed interesting enough. The Hufflepuff made his way to his Transfiguration class. Once he entered the classroom, he took a seat in the middle. Thomas then took out the things he needed for the lesson and placed them on the desk in front of him.

Thomas moved his attention towards the professor as the professor got started with the lesson. The Hufflepuff made sure to take as many notes as he could. There was a lot being said, but he didn't mind. He was glad that he didn't need to do any form of introductions, he had already done it in his other two classes, and he didn't want to do that again. Thomas watched in awe as the professor had changed a quill into a bird, amazed that magic could do that.

It wasn't long before the lessons had come to an end and they were dismissed. Thomas quickly packed up his things, said a soft goodbye and thank you to the professor before heading out the door.

Camille was in a way excited for class, since all she ever knew was preparing for Hogwarts, which her birth parents had made sure of. But now that she was here, it was different. She felt nervous of doing magic, but didn't want to dissapoint anyone of doing it not right. She still couldn't believe she had her own wand, she didn't felt ready for learning. But this was the time to do so.

The blonde made her way to the classroom and found an seat in the middle as she figured out was the nicest for now. She noticed some familliar faces and watched the professor as he started with the lesson. Thankfully this lesson theuy didn't had to introduce themselves and they just went on with the lecture. She took some parchment to take a few notes and listened as the professor spoke. It seemed like an difficult subject, and Camille had no idea how she would ever be able to do stuff like this. Although she liked animals and didn't want to hurt them while doing transfiguration. When the lesson was over and Camille had finished her notes she left the room.

Being magical had been quite the surprise, but even more so was this magical school. It was just huge, and different, and really, Magne missed his parents and the ocean. This school had a lake and a cliff front but was for all intents and purposes land locked. He couldn’t leave. The waterfront would make him feel better, but it was difficult to adjust to the dorm, to the fact he was magic and the fact everyone spoke english. He wished that he had paid enough attention in his english classes, but he really hadn’t. He put on his uniform, trying his best to not be too uncomfortable in it, and then carefully picked out the books he needed, taking his helpful translation dictionary with him as he went to class.

Magne followed the other ravenclaws to the transfiguration classroom. He took a spot in the room opting to sit pretty close to the front and had his translation book as well as the class book out in front of him. He glanced up at the professor as the man got started and he was having to really focus to absorb it. He looked at the board and to all of the things that the professor was perhaps saying they would cover. Magne wrote it down knowing that he wasn’t getting a lot of what the professor said and would need to read outside of the room. He tried his best to follow, but he also couldn’t take great notes from it, as he was listening. He liked the demonstrations that the professor showed them, it helped his notes. Eventually the lesson came to an end and Magne, just felt out of his depth.

Another Styx in Ravenclaw. It was hard to see them in any other house besides Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Kharon Styx was no exception. He blamed it on the fact that he was smart, and valued wisdom and gaining intelligence over people themselves. People were sort of boring. Kharon did not think his family was in that group because they were so unpredictable. He would hate the walk to and from classes from the Ravenclaw towers, but he would have to get used to it. He could try out for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team to get in better shape, but then again, he did not see himself doing that. Not as a first year. He groaned as he finally got out of bed, got his things, and left the Ravenclaw towers to head to class.

Kharon walked in the Transfiguration classroom and sat down in a seat near the back. Professor Odegard introduced himself to the first years, and let them know that he will be teaching them for a while. He took some notes over what they would be going over. He understood that it would take some time before they would be going over for the next seven years. He listed them down and made some short notes over what was what. He heard the last one that they would go over, and the list was not done yet. He would have to wait for the next week to finish, and maybe the week after to actually use magic. He put his notes away and left the Transfiguration lesson for the day.

Tanith was nervous for her first classes. She wanted to make a good impression, but was that arrogant? Was it really that much to believe the Professors would see her? Or pay enough attention to care? Her mind was whirling, but she did her best anyway, taking extra time to get ready. She was up with the sun, packing her school bag and checking off the list she'd made the night before, double and triple checking it to make sure it was all in place. She then spent an hour getting ready- showering, drying and braiding her hair three seperate times until it was smooth and perfect. She put on her uniform, straightening it out and smoothing the skirt several times as she grabbed her bag.

Feeling at least a little put together, she walked down to class early, waiting in the hall until a few other students had arrived and gone inside. Taking a deep breath, Tanith moved inside. She found a seat in the middle- close enough to pay attention but not so close as to be in immediate attention. She smiled as she sat next to Thomas and set out her things, her parchment and quill and ink. She'd spent weeks with her sisters, practicing with a quill, and she still had ink stains on the palms of her hands. Feeling prepared, she turned her eyes up front to examine the room she was in and the Professor she was under.

The lesson got underway quickly. Tanith liked lessons like this, where she could just focus on her notes, get lost in the words and the studying of the lesson, of her organization and the voice of the Professor. Unfortunately, the class ended much more quickly than she would have liked. Sighing, she gathered her things and hurried out, eager to review her notes again to make sure she understood everything.
